Laura’s Story

It felt like the world had gone mad. Everywhere I looked, there seemed to be confusion, frustration verging on despair, and fear too. Then I got this text from a close friend:

“Want to come on a 7-mile pilgrimage to talk about what it’s meant to us to get through lockdown? I’d like to do it with you. We could walk from the outskirts of the city and head home.”

My whole body responded with a “Yes, count me in”.

It was absolutely the right decision. Fortunately for me, my friend is also a skilled listener and facilitator, who asks excellent questions. We took it in turns to speak and connect on an emotional level. It was a magical experience. I arrived home refreshed and ready to take on the world.

Taking time out to connect gave me the resources I needed to face the coming fortnight. When the world had gone crazy, I needed this ‘island of sanity’* to re-connect with myself and find the resources to build hope and confidence in my ability to handle the constant change.

This experience of connection and community is what Staying Grounded is all about.

*This phrase has been coined by Margaret Wheatley in her seminal work on Leadership.
